Founded in 2000, Hong Kong Federation of Designers Limited was renamed The Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations Limited in 2004. In April 2011, The Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations Limited adopted its FHKDA abbreviation exclusively.
The Federation was founded by FOUR major professional design associations, namely Chartered Society of Designers (CSD, HK), Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA), Hong Kong Interior Design Association (HKIDA), and Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association (HKFDA) for the incorporation of The Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC); Mr. Freeman Lau was elected as the first Chairman of The Federation. The Federation initiated the setup of a Design Centre in 2000, and at the Preparatory Meeting held in April 2001, the Chairman of the Preparatory Committee was Mr. Victor Lo. The Hong Kong Design Centre was then invited to one of the Members after its incorporation in 2001. Currently, FHKDA has a total of 29 members
During the early years, The Federation has acted as a platform for the discussion of design, education, cultural policy and infrastructure development, providing room for expression of ideas and opinions from the industry to the government. As early as 2001, The Federation has written recommendations to The Cultural and Heritage Commission to strive for more collaborative efforts in supporting the development of the design and creative industry; and in 2005, a white paper was further presented to the government, promoting the setup of a Design Museum under the West Kowloon Development Project.
Since 2011, FHKDA has taken on a more significant role in coordinating projects that foster collaborations of professionals in different sectors of design with other industries and partners in the economy. To compliment the work of HKTDC, HKDC and those by different local institutions, FHKDA focused its effort in facilitating inter-city exchange programmes and communication, as well as fostering collaborations between designers/brands from around the region. In 2013, FHKDA has launched the “HK-SZ Initiatives”, which comprised of three project deliverables – “The 4th Hong Kong/Shenzhen Cultural and Creative Forum”, “HK-SZ Design Industry Survey”, and HK-SZ Online Intelligence Platform (the “DesignHub”). FHKDA has also been asked to take up the organization of the “GDN Symposium”, a concurrent event of the annual BODW. Since taken up the organization of the event, FHKDA has managed to grow the number of GDN members from 30 in 2012 to 99 in 2016.
Upon years of collaboration, FHKDA and SZIDA has jointly organized “The 1st HK-SZ Design Biennale”, which was held in September - November 2013 in Shenzhen. 8 exhibitions together with 8 events were held during the period. FHKDA has collaborated with 42 organizations (21 from Hong Kong and 21 from Shenzhen), bringing over 300 designers from Hong Kong to the different events. The event attracted over 680,000 visitors. FHKDA and SDPA has co-organized “The 2nd HK-SZ Design Biennale” in 2016 with over 300+ Hong Kong designers participated in 27 exhibitions, 29 networking sessions/seminars, and 82 workshops at 46 locations around Hong Kong. 209 products/exhibits have been developed out of the event. 9 products concepts and over 140 SKUs have been developed, under the mark of "NEXXT" – a brand empowered by FHKDA and SZIDA, endorsed by HK-SZ Initiatives, as a result of the two Design Biennales. The “20…..43 Business of Hong Kong Design” held in 5 cities in the Mainland from July to Dec 2017, a total of 43 cases selected from different disciplines, demonstrating different forms of collaboration, highlight the concerted efforts of creative and industrial sectors of the Hong Kong community and those in the Mainland provinces and municipalities, has attracted over 900,000 visitors.
FHKDA has been organizing Expeditions to different cities around Asia since 2011. It has led delegations to attend the “Taiwan/Hong Kong Design Industries Forum” and the “Hong Kong/Taiwan Cultural Cooperation Forum” in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The delegation has successfully accomplished the objectives of evolving capacity, advancing collaborations, and building networks by promoting cross-cultural awareness between design or non-design industries of the two cities, and has agreed in the last meeting to conduct an industry-wide human resources study. The visit in 2013 has resulted in a collaborative effort between POSH and a Taiwan designer to develop a new product which has been successfully launched and marketed. The visits to Seoul and Bangkok in 2015 and 2016 had also led to a number of collaborations.
FHKDA aims to consolidate the industry efforts in Hong Kong by building stronger relationships with key local professional bodies and design institutions, as well as those in around the region so as to ride on the national development strategy involving "One Belt One Road Initiative" and "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area", and strive to further strengthen the "Design Twin Cities" development for Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
