The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) is the peak body for professional Australian designers.
It represents all categories of qualified, practicing designers, design businesses, educational bodies and industry suppliers.
Originally formed in 1947, the DIA is a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation with a national office in Melbourne and active state branches in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and ACT.
Interior Designers and Product Designers currently make up the largest proportion of DIA membership by design category, with Graphic Designers, Interior Architects, Multimedia Designers, Fashion Designers, Furniture Designers and other categories also represented.
With a high public and professional profile in government, media and the industry, the DIA acts as a focal point to maintain and improve the role of design in Australia.
It is an impartial, credible and respected source of news and information about all aspects of Australian design, and provides an extensive networking and contact point for members, industry and the public.
The DIA is actively involved in fostering a healthy professional environment, lobbying governments and other bodies, and delivers a range of tangible benefits and services to members and the broader community.
It is part of an international network of major design organisations, having full membership status with ICSID, IFI and ICOGRADA, as well as association with or support of other design bodies including the Australian Design Alliance, the Asia Pacific Space Designers Alliance, Good Design Australia and Green Building Council of Australia.
